Hey guys, welcome back to Talkin Tarantino’ and today we are going to talk about the relationship and partnership between Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. I’m going to talk about how they met and became friends, and the work they’ve done together since then.
They first met at the 17th Toronto Film Festival in 1992 as two freshly budding directors. They had both just released their respective directorial debuts. Tarantino with Reservoir Dogs and Rodriguez with El Mariachi. These films were also similar but very different with Reservoir Dogs having a neo-noir inspiration and El Mariachi being neo-western. They were both directors speaking on a panel at the festival talking about the general aestheticization of violence regarding to cinema and giving their opinions on directors like Brian De Palma and Martin Scorcese. Funnily enough years later Tarantino and Rodriguez would also be talked about in that conversation for their use of violence in Tarantino’s Kill Bill and Rodriguez’s Sin City. Since that panel as well they have never really been apart often bouncing ideas off of one another and working on multiple projects together.
Which brings me to the next section which is the work these two have done together. The first thing these two worked on together was From Dusk Till Dawn which was a movie that Tarantino wrote but sold the script to Miramax who put Robert Rodriguez in charge of directing it. They both also act in the movie. Tarantino plays Jimmy Gecko a somewhat major role in the film while Rodriguez stars in a much more minor role. Tarantino also stars in another one of Rodriguez’s films Desperado which is a direct sequel to his debut movie El Mariachi. After that there were two films, they both had parts directing in a film called Four Rooms which also had directing segments from Allison Anders and Alexandre Rockwell and a film called Grindhouse which was a co-production of Planet Terror by Rodriguez and Death Proof by Tarantino. A lesser-known instance of their partnership was during Pulp Fiction in which Rodriguez directed the scenes that Tarantino starred in as Jimmy. As of recently they have not partnered on any films since Grindhouse and are unlikely to work together again in the near future as they both are seemingly working on separate solo projects. Tarantino released Once Upon A Time In Hollywood back in 2019 and reportedly working on a new film about a famous American film critic named Pauline Kael. Tarantino has also stated that he plans to end his filmmaking career after his 10th film. Rodriguez on the other hand recent works is a movie called Hypnotic starring Ben Affleck and has also begun developmental phases for a new Spy Kids reboot titled Spy Kids: Armageddon.
To recap we talked about how Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez first met and how they started a budding friendship and partnership after the 17th Toronto Film Festival. The projects both of these men have worked together and the future or lack thereof of their partnership. Anyways thank you all for watching the blog and I hope you tune in next time where we’ll talk about Tarantino's Unconventional Soundtrack Choices.
